Carpentersville man arrested after defrauding Des Plaines bank of $20,000, police say – Shaw Local

A Carpentersville man accused of defrauding a Des Plaines bank of more than $20,000 was arrested this week while trying to open an account at a different bank, police said.

Robert Krilich, 57, of the 6000 block of Sanders Court, was charged with forgery, defrauding a financial institution, aggravated identity theft on a person 60 or older and issuing a fraudulent identification card.

Police said in a news release that the scam began on Sept. 5, 2010, when Krilich used a fake ID and a Nevada driver’s license to open a savings account at Village Bank & Trust, 1545 Ellinwood Ave. The two bonds, the bank later found out, were fake, police said.

In October, the bank found that more than $20,000 had been drained from the account, which police said led to an internal investigation using fake bonds and false identification.

Information on the documents Krilich used, including a Social Security number, was linked to a 61-year-old Florida man who never had a Nevada driver’s license and never authorized anyone to open a bank account in his name, police reported.

Village Bank & Trust is a subsidiary of Wintrust Bank. Last Saturday, Krilich visited Wintrust Bank in Chicago and attempted to open an additional account, police said.

An employee found out about the scam in Des Plaines from an internal flyer and asked Krilik to return on Monday. The bank then informed the police.

Des Plaines police arrested Krilik on Monday when he returned to a Chicago bank and tried to open a checking account using a different, fraudulent name, according to the news release.

Krilich later told investigators he used out-of-state identification cards and documents to open bank accounts, and admitted defrauding the Des Plaines bank, authorities said.

A Cook County judge on Tuesday set Krilik’s bail at $100,000. Krilich did not appear at the hearing due to a medical issue, authorities said.

A dispositional hearing is scheduled for Friday morning.
